Obtaining Licence When One Party is Absent |
One party to the marriage (applicant or joint applicant) may submit the completed application form to the Clerk's Office in order to obtain the Marriage Licence, provided that appropriate identification is submitted for both parties. |
Three Month Validity |
There is no waiting period for a marriage licence. The licence is valid immediately once issued. A Marriage Licence is valid anywhere in Ontario for 90 days from the date it is issued. Should the 90 day period expire, another licence must be purchased. No refunds can be provided for marriage licences issued. |
Applicants Aged 16 and 17 Years |
Applicants aged 16 and 17 must have the written consent of their parents. Further information with respect to these situations is available from the Clerk's Office. |
Divorced Applicants |
Within Canada: Applicants who have been divorced within Canada are required to produce either the original or a certified copy of the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce. Certification may be obtained through the Courts. Outside Canada: Applicants who have been divorced outside of Canada are required to follow a different process in order to ensure that their divorce is honoured in this Country. Please visit the Service Ontario website for further information. |
Widowed Applicants |
Applicants who are widowed are not required to provide proof of the death of their spouse. For more information about getting married in Ontario, including a current list of religious officials authorized to perform legal marriages, please visit Service Ontario website. |
I'm married, now what? |
After the ceremony, the person who performed your wedding provides you with a record of solemnization as a keepsake. This is not a marriage certificate. You may apply for a marriage certificate from Service Ontario 8 to 12 weeks after your marriage ceremony. Couples can complete a Marriage Certificate Application and mail it directly to the Registrar General's office or request the Marriage Certificate online at Service Ontario. |
